This book has been one of my most frequently used reference books in the past few years. It is the first of its kind, that is, books in English on Chinese instruments. While it does not have any musical examples, other than the names of pieces, it is still a great reference. The symbol dictionary for pipa technique helps to demystify. It is highly recommended for those new to Chinese orchestra, performers and composers alike.

The Fenghuang, or Chinese Phoenix, is a mythological bird that is supreme over all other birds. It is a symbol of virtue and grace. Its feathers contain the five fundamental colors: black, white, red, blue and yellow. In this musical dream, Fenghuang appears in the following sequences:

1. Awakening 鳳凰初醒
2. Encountering Python 鳳蛇相爭
3. Taking Flight 鳳凰展翅
